Puritan Condominiums

The History -

Part of the awe when living in a historic district is learning the history behind your home. The Following article is dated August 29, 1915 and taken from the Grand Rapids Herald. It reveals the anticipation and excitement of the Puritan building completion in 1915 - just as it does for those searching for a modern condominium nearly a century later.

The Apartment House, which is being built by John Kamp on the southwest corner of Wealthy and College avenues, is approaching completion. It is an ideal structure for the purpose, both in outward appearance and interior arrangement. The first story is brick veneer with massive porches. The second story and gables are framed with cement, and the third is lighted with large dormers and windows in the gables. The exterior represents the Wealthy and College fronts. The west end is a front just like the one on College Avenue. This gives three large entrances, each with commodious porch. The building contains twelve family apartments, each consisting of five rooms and a bathroom, and each apartment opens upon a porch. The interior finish is mahoganized. The doors are a mahoganized birch, and all the trimming are old brass. All the walls and ceilings are to be artistically decorated. The bathrooms will have tiled floors. Speaking tubes in all apartments, the lobby and the telephone in the hall will be installed for the first use of the tenants. As printed in the Grand Rapids Herald on August 29, 1915.
